Engineering and human factors.

Collision avoidance is an engineering problem and a behaviour problem. Our team is built for both.

Engineering

From machine interfaces, brakes and engines to haul-road and mine design.

Human factors

How people perceive warnings, accept automation and change habits on shift.

The nine EMESRT layers.

The Vehicle Interaction 9-Layer Model combines site and operating controls with technology. Level 9 intervention is the final layer in a wider system of risk controls.

  1. L1 · Site requirements

Set the mine design, standards and performance requirements that shape safe vehicle interaction.

  2. L2 · Segregation controls

Separate people and mobile equipment where practicable through layout, barriers and traffic controls.

  3. L3 · Operating procedures

Define clear site rules for routes, intersections, right of way and high-risk interactions.

  4. L4 · Authority to operate

Confirm people and equipment are authorised for the tasks and areas where they operate.

  5. L5 · Fitness to operate

Support operator capability and fitness for safe vehicle operation.

  6. L6 · Operational compliance

Supervise and review whether agreed procedures and controls are followed in practice.

  7. L7 · Operator awareness

Use in-cab information and alerts to help operators recognise developing hazards.

  8. L8 · Advisory controls

Provide warnings and guidance that help prevent or manage hazardous vehicle interactions.

  9. L9 · Intervention controls

Where designed and validated, system intervention can request machine slowdown or stopping to help avoid a collision.

TRL 4 CAS certification experience.

We have experience supporting TRL 4 certification and validation activities for collision-avoidance systems (CAS). Level 9 describes intervention control in the EMESRT framework; TRL 4 describes technology readiness.

Comfortable on every side of the table.

We have managed projects with mining clients, machine OEMs, PDS OEMs and Level 9 OEMs — so we know what each needs to say yes.

  • Mining clients

    Risk owners, operations and maintenance.

  • Machine OEMs

    Interfaces, brake systems and warranties.

  • PDS OEMs

    Detection hardware, zones and firmware.

  • Level 9 OEMs

    Intervention logic and validation.
